After the loss of a family member, it is common to see many different reactions among the surviving pets. This can range from anxiety or depression, to increased reactivity to stimuli. Animals can exhibit changes in appetite, sleep patterns, and/or decreased playing behaviors after losing a member of their social unit. This could be a response to the loss itself, or a response to the grief of their owner.
Some of the best ways to help your pet through their grief are good for you too. Exercising (a long walk in nature, or playing ball in the yard) and spending time together can help clear the mind and aid in processing your grief. Remember to reward positive behavior and avoid punishment for negative behavior, as that increases anxiety and confusion during a difficult time.
